(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – An Oak Brook-based purveyor of hot dogs and Italian beef sandwiches has some aggressive growth plans.

Portillo’s told investors this week that the chain, which currently has fewer than 80 locations, hopes to add 920 new restaurants over the next 20 years. Of these, 800 would be full-service restaurants, and 120 would be the type of pickup or walkup location that Portillo’s has been experimenting with.

These are among the details unveiled earlier this week and reported by Ally Marotti, a senior reporter for Crain’s Chicago Business. She talked about the expansion plan on Thursday’s Noon Business Hour.

“They say that the new locations they’ve opened up recently are doing very well, they’re driving high revenues, and it has made them confident in their ability to select the right locations that can be kind of foolproof going forward for them,” Marotti said.

Portillo’s, which originated in the Villa Park in 1963, went public in 2021. The company has branched out to Florida and Texas and is now looking west, to Colorado and Nevada and other places, Marotti said.

Portillo’s stock has dropped to $15.73 a share this week. Its high was $47.92 in November 2021.
