CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Former Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin is challenging County Board President Toni Preckwinkle for her job and he said she’s wrong to oppose a temporary suspension of the County’s gasoline tax.

Richard Boykin made a campaign stop at a gas station at 75th and State where he said unleaded regular gas was $6.29 cents a gallon. He said the county needs to suspend its gasoline tax for 90 days. He said the county's portion of the gas tax is about $.10 per gallon.

Boykin admits the move would only save motorists about a $1.50 at each fill-up. But he says if the County Board can raise its own pay by ten-percent with three percent bumps each year, they should do something for the people they represent.

Incumbent Board President Toni Preckwinkle calls the proposal short-sighted and bad public policy. Boykin said she's wrong.
