CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- With less than two weeks to go before Thanksgiving, Governor Pritzker and Mayor Lightfoot are making recommendations for a safe, COVID-free holiday, and you’re probably not going to like it.
Governor JB Pritzker and Mayor Lori Lightfoot suggest you severely limit who you decide to spend Thanksgiving with this year.
Governor Pritzker said the state is starting an awareness campaign called "Healthy Holidays To You", and while the recommendations may not be easy to swallow this Thanksgiving.
"At the end of the day, traditions are so important to all of us, but this year we need to celebrate a little bit differently," Pritzker said.
The governor said staying apart and having a “virtual” Thanksgiving get-together is the safest option this year. The next best thing, he said, would be to limit who you gather with and to have anyone who’ll be at the party quarantine from now until then to reduce the chances of giving or getting COVID.
"While staying apart and holding a virtual celebration is, by far, the safest option, if you do choose to have a small, in-person Thanksgiving more or less quarantine or come close to it for the two weeks prior," Pritzker said.
Mayor Lightfoot said people should cancel their normal Thanksgiving plans, and to not spend the holiday with anyone who does not live in your household.
"While this is tough, and of course this whole year has been tough, we must tell you, you must cancel the normal Thanksgiving plans, particularly if they include guests that do not live in your immediate household," Lightfoot said.
Governor Pritzker said he is not issuing a stay-at-home order, although he said that could become necessary.
"We're running out of time, and we're running out of options. Our growth in new cases is now exponential. We are seeing current numbers and future projections worse than what we saw in the spring,” Pritzker said Thursday at his latest COVID-19 briefing.
