CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Today is Casimir Pulaski Day, a holiday observed across the city. But how many know its origins?
The day honors Casimir Pulaski, a Polish-born cavalry officer killed in the Revolutionary War. The commemorative day began in 1986, when then-Mayor Harold Washington introduced a resolution to designate the first Monday in March as Pulaski Day.
Mayor Washington said that we honor Pulaski not only for his heroics in fighting for freedom but helping to form a new homeland for Poland's people.
Pulaski died in battle in 1789 in Georgia.
City offices are closed today along with the libraries. Schools, banks, and the post offices are open.
The Polish Museum of America is holding a virtual ceremony to commemorate.
