(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — More than 4,000 performers will take part in this year’s Arts in the Dark Halloween Parade.

About a hundred creative organizations are involved - arts, music, culture - representing just about all segments of Chicago’s diverse population.

“Definitely my favorite part it's definitely the puppets because they're really, really cool,” 12-year-old Natalie said.

She plays in an orchestra that practices in the Fine Arts Building on South Michigan in the Loop, when she caught wind that some of Chicago’s finest puppetry artists were in the building this weekend, creating their puppets for this year's parade, and she was invited to come check it out.

One of the artistic directors, Claire Saxe, explained the loose narrative behind these new, giant futuristic puppets with an interactive design. The story is that they have just emerged and are exploring their surroundings for the first time, including the crowd.

“So things that can sort of float over the crowd and kind of bop down close enough to be touched. Like I want somebody to be able to reach up and touch the weird tentacle that are dripping off of the end of the bopping mushroom. We have lots of like small creatures,” Saxe said.

The 10th Annual Arts in the Dark Halloween Parade will take place on Saturday, Oct. 19 along State Street.
