(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A west suburban member of Congress who is in a tough fight for re-election said Thursday she’s not out of the running, regardless of what her Republican opponent has said.

Lauren Underwood, who holds Illinois’ 14th Congressional District seat, was trailing Jim Oberweis by fewer than 800 votes. Oberweis on Wednesday declared himself the winner, based on research his campaign did on returns in the tight race.

But Underwood estimated there are at least 18,000 mail-in ballots that had not been counted. Underwood said 11,000 of the mail-in ballots are from McHenry County, and 7,200 are from Lake County. Results are still trickling in in five other counties that comprise the 14 District, she said.

“These votes must be counted as quickly and transparently as possible,” the freshman congresswoman said. “Every vote must be counted.”

Underwood was one of several Democratic newcomers to the House targeted for ouster. Suburban Congressman Sean Casten withstood a challenge from Republican Jeanne Ives.
