(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Organizers of Chicago's Pride Parade have decided to cancel this year's event, which had been moved from its traditional June date to Oct. 3.
In a letter published online Wednesday, parade organizer Tim Frye cited concerns about the resurgence of COVID-19, and promising a return for the parade next June 26.
“… we really wanted and hoped that there could be a parade in 2021. We don’t feel, though, that we can do it safely for everyone in the parade and the people watching,” Frye said.
Chicago’s Pride Parade is one of the largest in the nation celebrating the LGBTQ community. It’s also a major summertime event for the city, drawing upwards of 500,000 people to Northalsted.
Last year's parade was canceled outright in the thick of the pandemic.
