CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Plans to redevelop the Royal George Theater property and a neighboring property will be up for consideration by the Chicago Plan Commission later this month.
That’s because, after several revisions, Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd) has given his approval to the latest proposal from developers Draper and Kramer.
Hopkins said the proposed development will include 134 residential units, including affordable housing and retail space on the ground floor.
“This will be a big addition to the Steppenwolf community,” he said. “Artists, actors, performers — we expect — will be living in the new apartments that will be constructed.”
Some neighbors voiced concerns about the project's potential impact on the aesthetic of the neighborhood and traffic in the area.
“They were able to get the height reduced, the density reduced, some design changes,” said Hopkins.
To address traffic concerns, Hopkins said deliveries and trash pick up will be limited to non-peak hours, and residents of the new building will not be able to obtain zoned parking passes for the immediate area.
The developers will also contribute $300,000 toward the construction of a new park at the corner of North Avenue and Larrabee Street.
As for when they might break ground on the new project, Hopkins said he thinks developers will move “as quickly as they can” if they get the permits and approval they’re seeking.
