SPRINGFIELD (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An Illinois State Trooper was shot Tuesday night in Springfield, allegedly by a man wanted by Chicago Police in connection with a murder investigation.

The trooper had pulled over a car driven by 37-year-old Cristobal Santana of Chicago at about 10:45 pm.

It's unclear what transpired, but Springfield Police reported  that officers responded to the scene, near I-55, on a report of an officer shot.

State Police said "during the interaction" between the trooper and the driver "shots were fired and the trooper was struck in the leg."

They're not saying whether the trooper fired any shots. The suspect ran from the scene.

Police set up a perimeter and conducted a search, telling area residents to stay inside.

Santana, wanted in connection with a Chicago murder, according to police, was taken into custody about three hours later.
