MOUNT PROSPECT (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Chicago Archdiocese is sparing some Catholic churches in the northwest suburbs from closure in its latest round of consolidations. But, other parishes will have to wait and see.
Starting in July, St. Thomas Becket in Mount Prospect and St. Alphonsus Liguori in Prospect Heights will unite, but both churches will continue to hold mass. Father Chris Kulig told St Thomas parishioners at the end of Saturday’s mass that one pastoral team will lead the yet-to-be named new parish.
"Knowing the newly unified parish will have a strong Polish community, the priest placement board will take this into consideration when recommending (a) pastor candidate Cardinal Cupich,” Kulig said.
There are no plans to change the parishes or schools at Our Lady of the Wayside, St. Edna and St James in Arlington Heights as well as nearby St. Mary and St Joseph the Worker.
The Renew My Church Commission wants more time to decide what to do about St. Ansgar, St John the Evangelist and St Peter Damian in the Hanover Township group, but the archdiocese said St. John’s school will remain open.
