(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A civil trial resumes Friday over a Willowbrook woman’s lawsuit against a medical equipment sterilization company that emitted toxic fumes into the air in her neighborhood.

Sue Kamuda alleges the ethylene oxide emitted by the Sterigenics plant in Willowbrook was what caused her to develop a highly aggressive form of breast cancer. She lived about three blocks away from the plant for more than 20 years before being diagnosed.

In opening statements Thursday, Kamuda’s lawyers contended they’ll prove the ethylene oxide was one of the causes of the cancer. Sterigenics’ attorneys said they’ll show Kamuda was not exposed to enough of the fumes.

Kamuda is one of hundreds of people suing Sterigenics over ethylene oxide emissions. The plant shut down three years ago.
