LAKE IN THE HILLS, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It was standing room only at the Lake in the Hills village board meeting Tuesday evening as more than 80 people came out to support and oppose Uprising Bakery and Cafe.
The eatery first drew attention for hosting a family- friendly drag show, which was met with harassment and vandalism.
The Daily Herald reported that some supporters of the bakery called on the village board to condemn those protesting, claiming they were spreading conspiracies and fear.
"We won't back down," Eric Willoughby said as reported in the Daily Herald. "We won't tuck our tails in-between our legs and run away."
Others think the LGBTQ+ events at the bakery are something young children shouldn’t see.
One resident said he plans to camp out at the bakery and protest every day until March.
Village President Ray Bogdanowski told residents no matter what side of the issue they’re on, the village’s main focus is safety.
