HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- This weekend’s fatal shooting of a teen in Highland Park has prompted a change at the local high schools. There will be metal detectors and additional police Wednesday for the first day of classes.

In an email to parents, Superintendent Bruce Law told them District 113 has moved up the new security plan for Highland Park and Deerfield High Schools. The district expedited the use of metal detectors after Sunday’s fatal shooting of Omar Morales-Diaz allegedly by another 16- year-old.

One of the board members who voted for the weapons detection system in a split 3-2 decision said the choice was harder than some of the mitigations they made for COVID.

The Highland Park News reports Jodi Shapira pointed out security experts did not recommend metal detectors in the wake of the parade shooting last year.
