(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A west suburban hotel is offering a bowl of soup that makes the $187 hot dog look like a bargain.
If you have an appetite -- and nearly $2,000 to spend -- you can enjoy a bowl of soup at The Colonial Room at The Drake Hotel Oak Brook.
It is offering a special edition of its signature Bookbinder's soup dubbed the “$1,863 Bookbinder Soup Experience.”
The price point is a tip of the hat to the year – 1863 -- that Samuel Bookbinder created the recipe in Philadelphia. The seafood bisque originally called for snapping turtle but has been modified by The Drake to feature red snapper from the Gulf of Mexico.
Other accoutrements include Ossetra caviar, gold flakes and Louis XIII Cognac instead of the traditional dry sherry. Guests who spring for the dish will get a cooking lesson from Executive Chef Ezequiel Dominguez on preparing the soup.
“People are looking for those one-of-a-kind experiences,” says Jill Hare, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing. “We think this is a great way to not only enjoy a wonderful soup but have the cooking demo and have everybody be together. This is what The Drake’s about.”
A regular bowl of Bookbinder soup costs $10. The more expensive version will stay on the menu as long as people are interested; a two-week reservation is required.
The Pendry Chicago hotel in the Loop recently attracted notice by offering a gourmet hot dog in conjunction with the city’s 187th birthday. That limited-time, specially prepared sausage and Old Fashioned cocktail combination went for $187 – a relative bargain compared to The Drake’s Bookbinder soup.
