CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A donation in Ukrainian Village may signal a broader partnership between two groups in bringing aid to refugees.

Two shipping containers were set up in a parking lot at Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Church, where donations for Ukrainian refugees are received and distributed. Matt Rakowsky oversees the operation, which received a large donation from Black Men United this weekend.

The national non-profit is dedicated to changing the narrative of the Black community.

The donation, fully distributed within minutes of arrival in Ukrainian Village showed a great need for furniture and household items among the refugees.

"We got a much better idea and Black Men United got a much better idea of what exactly these people need and this is going to be the first of many such events."

Rakowsky added that many refugees finding shelter are still being placed in empty apartments.

"When we started this, we found out that people were sleeping on towels on the floor. Children were sleeping on towels on the floor."
