(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin calls the situation at the southern U.S. border a refugee crisis, the likes that have never been seen before.

With many seeking refuge in here from around the world, Durbin says Congress needs to bring a bipartisan update to decades-old immigration policy. He said members of the Illinois Farm Bureau have urged him for help.

“They need workers, immigrant workers, to work in the orchards and the dairy farms and on the regular farm operations,” Durbin said.

He said there needs to be an “all hands on deck” approach to what he calls a national emergency.

Durbin points out that asylum seekers are not just coming from countries south of the U.S. border. Also included are Ukrainians and Russians fleeing their countries to avoid war.
