CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It's a multi-galactic road atlas. Researchers with the University of Chicago have helped create a unique map, which gives us a much better view of the universe.
The map was created by the Dark Energy Survey, which is a collaboration of international researchers, coordinated by the Fermi National Accelerator Lab in Batavia, which is affiliated with the University of Chicago. It is the largest of its kind to show the positions and shapes of galaxies as far as seven billion light years from Earth.
It also traces "dark matter," a mysterious substance that scientists believe makes up about a quarter of the universe and provides gravitational pull that binds galaxies.
Researchers said the map is a key step in getting a better understanding of dark matter and what the universe is made of.
