CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Congressman Danny Davis is encouraging people to donate to help stop the spread of COVID-19, which is resulting in some 4,000 deaths a day in India.

“America can never be safe unless other countries like India and others can be safe,” Davis told WBBM Newsradio.

Dr. Vijay Prabakhar is chair of the congressman’s Multiethnic Advisory Committee and told they’re looking for help in many forms.

“Oxygen tanks, oxygen concentrators, therapeutic medicine like Remdesivir and, also, if you would like to donate cash, you can donate directly to the Indian Red Cross,” Prabakhar said.

He said the push is not only to help people in India but also to stop variants from growing and spreading.

The World Hindu Council of America, based out of southwest suburban Sugar Grove, already sent a planeload of supplies to India on Thursday, Prabakhar added.

President Joe Biden announced last week that the U.S. will restrict travel from India to the U.S. starting this week because of the surge in COVID-19 cases.
