CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 4-year-old Valparaiso girl could be leaving the hospital soon after a successful heart transplant.

After undergoing six open-heart surgeries and waiting 10 months, Adelyn Joy Hughes has a new heart. Her surgery took place on Sept. 20, about two weeks before she turned 4 on Oct. 2.

Her father Allen, told the Northwest Indiana Times Addie, as she's nicknamed, was born with a heart defect detected at Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago.

COVID-19 slowed down the process of finding a new heart, which is difficult for a young child to begin with.

Addie could be at the Ronald McDonald House for three months then, hopefully, she’d be back home.

A GoFundMe account has been set up under Team Adelyn Joy.
