(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Chicago's inspector general is praising one department's efforts to help the homeless.
Inspector General Deborah Witzburg says the city is doing good work assisting unhoused people secure and keep lodging while regularly cleaning homeless encampments with advance notice to persons staying at the sites.
The IG's office released an audit of the city's Department of Family and Support Services. It says the department "has found success in rapidly housing encampment residents" who want permanent housing, and has notified "encampment residents in advance, providing notice before disposing of potentially abandoned items."
The watchdog agency recommends DFSS do a better job informing City Council members about how the process works.
On a related note, Mayor Johnson now supports a tiered tax-rate system to increase the real estate transfer tax on high-end properties to use the money to try to fight homelessness.
