(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Waukegan Public Library is offering much more to bike riders than books.
The library has installed a bicycle repair station. Several tools are attached to the station that riders can use for such things as tightening or adjusting handlebars, seats and tires.
The library's executive director, Tiffany Verzani, said the repair station is a way to encourage more people in Waukegan to ride bikes rather than drive.
“The bike repair station really opens the door to conversation and to have people reflect on how that can have a positive impact on their life.
“And maybe it will help them decide that they can bike to work or to the lakefront or can promote their health and wellness when they know that the bike repair station is there.”
Verzani spoke about how the repair station aligns with the library’s goals focusing on health and wellness.
“Improving health and wellness opportunities, having affordable transportation options, biking to work, which our own staff take advantage of.
“It's, I think, really helpful. It brings all of those things together, community needs and community values in a lot of ways.”
Future plans for the repair station include an air pump to fill bike tires, as well as racks for scooters and skateboards.
