(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The rain slowed NASCAR drivers on Sunday but did not dampen enthusiasm for all fans.
Ohio resident Colin Squire just drove in from Santa Monica, California as part of a convoy of Mini-Cooper enthusiasts. They took Route 66 to the Windy (and Rainy) City.
Although Squire was disappointed that some events were compressed because of the weather, he said he had an amazing experience and was happy to meet fellow NASCAR fans.
“With the new car, I thought it was actually a perfect fit. Too bad the weather didn’t cooperate,” he said.
Sam and Landon Kramer of California were also among a sparse group of NASCAR fans in the downtown Sunday morning. Both were hoping to catch some racing and a Cubs game later.
Dianna Sotelo of Highland Park was going with the flow. “I’m happy to be here.”
NASCAR was estimating as many as 50,000 fans would attend events on both Saturday and Sunday.
