(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Wheaton man was taken to a Northern Indiana jail this week after allegedly leading police on a 54-mile chase in a stolen U-Haul.

Indiana State Police said a trooper tried to stop Geramie Evans near Elkhart around 9 p.m. Monday night after hearing from police in Ohio they had been chasing him in a stolen truck.

When the 26-year-old motorist refused to pull over, police said they used stop sticks to deflate his tires — twice. But Evans continued to drive on three rims while throwing off sparks, police said.

Eventually the U-Haul he was driving eventually stopped in Porter County, police said.

In a Facebook livestream, Evans said he feared for his life.

He was arrested and hospitalized before being released. He faces several charges, including vehicle theft; resisting law enforcement, reckless driving and drug possession, police said.
