NEW LENOX, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Will County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a 21-year-old man following a domestic incident during which he’s alleged to have shot his father and beat his mother in New Lenox.

According to police, a 911 call came in at about 4 a.m. Monday from a home in the 1900 block of Grand Prairie Drive indicating a 21-year-old man had just shot his father in the face and injured his mother, who tried to intervene. The caller went on to say the suspect then sped off in a Honda Civic, and may be armed and intoxicated.

A Will County deputy found the suspect in a 2020 silver Honda Civic near Cedar Road and Laraway Road and tried to pull him over, but the man drove off and eventually drove back to his subdivision.

The deputy followed the 21-year-old man down Wind Crest Lane, where he allegedly tried to drive through someone’s backyard. As the man got out of the car, the deputy commanded him to stop and deployed a stun gun, but the man refused to obey commands and continued advancing toward the deputy, according to the Will County Sheriff's Office.

The deputy then shot the man, identified as 21-year-old Alexander Wheeler. He was reportedly not armed at the time.

Police gave first aid to Wheeler, who was taken to Silver Cross Hospital and pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said. Wheeler’s father was taken to the same hospital in serious condition.
