LISTEN NOW: Sharon Van Etten joins the Broken Record podcast

Van Etten joined the Broken Record podcast as she told host Leah Rose about the impact her duties as a mom had on the making of the record. “As a mom, you find the moments you can to make s*** happen,” she exclaimed. “You’re like, ‘I have 30 minutes to make some magic.’ I’m going to go in there and do the best that I can and you set realistic goals for yourself.”
Van Etten made the move from New York to Los Angeles a few years back as the move paid off by the time the COVID-19 pandemic came about. Unlike her residence in New York, Van Etten had a studio in Los Angeles. An advantage of that setup was the ability to record whenever inspiration struck. Another advantage was the opportunity to multitask by watching her son while she made music.
“Most of the time he was outside skating and on early demos you can probably hear him in the yard,” she said. “There’s a window in my studio looking out so I could see him back and forth. Sometimes he would sit in there with me. If I was working on lyrics, then he would play the drums.”
