Rescuers discovered the woman had tumbled roughly 70 feet down the ravine and into a stream "with incredibly difficult access and uneven terrain," said BBC News.

Firefighters used a stretcher to hoist the woman out of the narrow gorge. First responders transported her to a hospital by helicopter.

"Piran the cat saved the day," said a spokesperson for Bodmin Police of the rescue, which happened near Wadebridge.

"It's a massive 'well done' to all the emergency services who worked together and to Piran," an eyewitness told the BBC. "The outcome could have been a lot worse."

Monday, police said the older woman had improved but was still in the hospital.

"She is in good spirits and is being well looked after," the police department said on social media.
