Cheerios has rebooted one of its most beloved commercials.
Back in 1999, Cheerios aired a heartwarming spot featuring a grandmother chatting with an infant about traveling to spend Christmas with family.
As the baby sits in a highchair, the grandma, played by actress Peggy Miley, describes where various family members live using Cheerios to map out the locations. The baby looks on hoping to grab one of the cereal pieces to snack on.
The underlying message to the sweet clip was the importance of being with family during the holidays.
Cheerios has since updated the commercial for 2020 and enlisted Miley and the now grown-up baby, Delfina Booth, to reprise their roles.
"I was too young to remember my experience filming the Cheerios holiday commercial, but I get the same warm feeling both re-watching the original commercial and participating in its recreation," Booth said in a statement, according to TODAY. "I can't wait for fans' reactions to the spot because while I've grown up, the importance of connecting with one's loved ones has only gotten stronger."
The new version starts with a shot of a Christmas ornament featuring an image of the grandmother and baby from the original commercial. It then moves on to show the adult granddaughter chatting with her granny over video chat.
Reprising her line from the ‘99 commercial, Miley says, "No matter where Grandma lives, we'll always be together for Christmas.”
The idea to revisit the commercial was first pitched by social media influencer Cori Spruiell and Cheerios immediately fell in love with the idea.
“Family togetherness is at the heart of this 20-year-old, iconic Cheerios commercial and that’s something that isn’t going to be physically possible for many this holiday season,” Kathy Dixon, Senior Brand Experience Manager for Cheerios, said in a statement.
“Many of our fans remember the grandma character and the baby from the original spot so, what better time than now to refresh the commercial, empathize with our audiences and capture today’s reality.”
Cheers to Cheerios!
