PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Steelers QB Mitch Trubisky admitted he might have been thinking less and going out and playing free when he replaced the injured Kenny Pickett. What did Mike Tomlin say about what he saw from Trubisky that was different?
“Just is aggressive pursuit of victory,” Tomlin said. That was it. Which is a short answer, but when you think about it maybe tells the story of what the difference was between the fourth quarter of Sunday opposed to the four starts.
Tomlin said in his opening remarks it was an opportunity for Trubisky to re-ascend with the offense. He said he was appreciative of his efforts and playmaking.
Work to do
With the win against Tampa Bay, the Steelers moved to just a game out of the division lead. The Ravens and Bengals are 3-3 with Cleveland also 2-4. Tomlin isn’t sticking out his chest to say they’ve arrived.
“Like I told you guys before we stepped into that stadium, we’ll be sometime working to get this stench off of us. It’s not one good plan. It’s not one good game. It’s not one win. I remain by that statement.”
“We’re a 2-4 team trying to get right. We are doing what is appropriate and we have an appropriate mindset.”
How do they keep the momentum going?
“By winning again. There is nothing we can do about it today, tomorrow or Thursday. We have to have good work days.
Good urgency. Build a plan and step into a stadium Sunday night and make it a reality.”
LB Love
Along with more praise of Robert Spillane and his smarts for playing different positions including the nickel at times against the Bucs. Tomlin also said of Devin Bush, a pass defended on the two-point conversion and five tackles Sunday.
“I thought he performance was really solid,” Tomlin said. “I thought it was really solid and on the upswing all year.”
Returning WR?
It’s the final week for the Steelers to practice 5’9” receiver Calvin Austin. By Sunday they must decide either to activate him or to put him on Injured Reserve and lose him for the season. The rookie injured his foot in training camp after making a splash during some of the practice reps.
“I thought he improved a little last week, he knocked a little bit more of the rust off,” Tomlin said. “We’ll see what this week holds. We still have a little bit of time in making the determining factor of his inclusion.”
His senior year of college at Memphis, Austin caught 74 passes for 1,149 yards with eight touchdowns. He had a 69-yard rush for a touchdown and returned five punts for 135 yards including a touchdown.
