DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit police are asking for the public’s help in tracking down a man they say is responsible for an armed carjacking that was caught on surveillance video on the city’s east side last month.

Police say a 58-year-old man was gassing up his silver 2009 Ford Edge at a gas station in the 18300 block of Morang -- in the area of Kelly and 7 Mile Roads -- when he was approached by an unknown suspect.

Surveillance video in the area shows the man standing by the open rear driver’s side door when the suspect walks up to him with his gun drawn. The suspect demanded the keys to vehicle and instructed the victim to walk away.

The suspect got in the car and fled the scene, headed northbound on Kelly towards 7 Mile. No injuries were reported during the incident.

Police say the vehicle was recovered a few hours later in the area of Proctor and Kirkwood, all the way on the opposite side of the city.

Authorities describe the suspect as a black male, who was last seen wearing  blue hooded sweatshirt, gray shorts and white Nike Air Force One shoes.
