Saints QB Taysom Hill working on passing, not running, in camp practices

Taysom Hill's worst moment in Friday's Saints training camp practice came when he scrambled up through the line and threw back late across the field.

The ball sailed high over Tommylee Lewis and was nearly intercepted. But while the result was suboptimal, there's one redemptive fact: In a game he'd have taken advantage of a clear chance to run. That's not something he looks for in practice reps.

"Yea, I think that's an instinctive thing for me," Hill said. "That's one of those things that, as someone who can run and you have to be able to make plays with your feet that, I feel very comfortable doing that."

Hill didn't specify the situation after practice, but noted one that went exactly like that. In a game, he'd have run. Right now he knows what he needs to work on.

"I want to work on stepping up, getting the ball out, working through my progression and everything else," Hill said. "I think that there's a balance of making it game-like ... but in a practice setting I'm gonna work on getting through the progression."

Hill and Jameis Winston have alternated first-team reps thus far as the pair battles for the starting job. Neither passer has stepped head and shoulders above the other, with both having a difficult day Thursday before bouncing back with efficient performances Friday afternoon.

But Hill indicated he wouldn't be any less aggressive with his legs when the preseason starts next week.

ON WORKING WITH NEW RECEIVERS

"It's certainly a process. ... When you see guys getting in and out of the huddle and up to the line of scrimmage, running the right thing and the right depth, their break and everything is where it's supposed to be and how it's supposed to be, your comfort level to throw it on time increases significantly.

"And I would say I don't necessarily need the rep with this young guy to see what he's doing, you know. If I see him doing the right things I'll trust him to cut loose."
