NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Con Edison is asking tens of thousands of its Queens customers to conserve energy amid the ongoing heatwave. As a way to protect its equipment, Con Ed reduced its voltage by about 8 percent in order to continue to maintain service as crews make repairs.
Officials are asking more than 116,000 residents of Glendale, Forest Hills, Forest Hills Gardens and Middle Village to conserve energy by not using washers, dryers, and microwaves until the equipment problems are resolved
It also asked those residents to refrain from using air conditioners unless it's required for health or medical reasons. The company says its equipment problems in these areas have an effect on the rest of the Con Edison system.Customers can report outages and check service restoration status online or by phone.
They ask residents to also report whether their neighbors also have lost power
