NEW YORK (1010 WINS) --  A knife-wielding man was shot and killed by police Friday morning on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

The shooting happened at an apartment building at 227 Cherry Street and Pike Slip at around 7 a.m. near the foot of the Manhattan Bridge.

Police were called to the building to investigate a 911 call of a domestic abuse claim. When cops got there, they were met at the door of the apartment on the 8th floor by the 911 caller, who stated the suspect was in the back of the apartment.

That's when they found the suspect hiding in a closet, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported,

All was calm as police were escorting him toward the hallway, NYPD Chief of Dept. Terrence Monahan said. But then suddenly he broke away from the officers, grabbed a large knife from the kitchen and started stabbing his partner, D'Auria reported.

That's when police shot him five times, D'Auria reported. "This happened in an instant, within a second," Monahan said. "As he's walking out he grabs that knife and immediately goes toward his domestic partner and begins stabbing him. At that point, the officers immediately discharged their weapons."

Officers immediately began to render aid, calling for an ambulance and performing CPR, Monahan said. The suspect was taken to Beekman Downtown Hospital, and was pronounced dead at 8:01 a.m.

The victim was taken to an area hospital and is being treated for slash wounds to the right side of the face and left shoulder, as well as puncture wound to the right shoulder.

He is listed in stable condition.

Police said the couple had a history of domestic violence.
