BRIDGEPORT, CT (1010 WINS) — A 32-year-old Connecticut man was arrested Thursday for assaulting five federal police officers while they attempted to pull him over, authorities said.

The Torrington man, Dennis Lee Waiters, was pulled over by the FBI’s Bridgeport Safe Streets Task Force and Bridgeport Police Department who were investigating gang-related violence and the potential for a retaliation shooting in Bridgeport on June 15, 2021, court documents show.

The officers activated their lights and sirens and got out of their cars with vests that had “FBI” and “POLICE” on them, officials said.

Waiters drove into the officers and their vehicles instead of stopping. He crashed into three different officers’ cars as well as a bystander driver.

One of the officers shot into Waiters’ car which caused it to veer into another law enforcement vehicle before crashing into a pole. When the car came to a stop, a passenger in Waiters’ car tried to flee the scene while leaving behind a semi automatic pistol but was arrested, authorities said.

Waiters was charged with assaulting, resisting, or impeding federal officers. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.
