NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A 14-year-old boy struck his head and was injured while subway surfing on top of a Queens subway train on Sunday, according to police.
The teen was riding on top of a Manhattan-bound 7 train around 4 p.m. as it approached the 111th St. Station in Corona, police said.
As the train pulled into the elevated station, the boy stuck his head on a beam, according to cops.
He was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst in stable condition.
An investigation is ongoing.
Last month, another 14-year-old boy survived a surfing incident in Queens when he was hit by a 7 train at the 103rd Street–Corona Plaza station, according to police and sources.
This past March, some kids were caught riding on top of an A train in the Rockaways, the NYPD said. They were stopped by officers at the Beach 60th Street station. No one was hurt. A report was made, and the kids were sent home with their guardians.
NYC Transit President Richard Davey had commented on the incident in a statement: "We've said it over and over—do not climb on top of trains because that won't end well, and we implore parents to tell their children, and friends to warn friends—avoid tragedy by riding inside."
The city has been working for months to curb youth subway surfing, collaborating with social media companies to remove videos promoting the dangerous stunt and launching a campaign, "Ride Inside, Stay Alive."
