ROCHELLE PARK, N.J. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — Police arrested two men for allegedly stealing $28,000 worth of shopping carts from a New Jersey supermarket over a two-week span, authorities said Wednesday.
Alfredo Rodriguez, 77, and Hector Cortes, 54, were arrested on Tuesday shortly after their 2003 Ford Econoline van pulled up outside the ShopRite on West Passaic Street in Rochelle Park.
They were both charged with theft, receiving stolen property, burglary tools, and possession of property derived from criminal activity.
Rochelle Park police worked with loss prevention when they spotted a red van after seeing it on surveillance video at the same store when shopping carts started going missing since March 27.
According to officials, there were 140 carts worth a total of $28,000 stolen from the supermarket.
Police found 5 carts inside the van and are working to determine if both men are connected to all of the stolen carts.
