NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Two Bronx toddlers were given Narcan this week after ingesting drugs in separate situations that resulted in their parents being charged, police said.
In the first incident, a 2-year-old girl was rushed "unconscious and unresponsive" to St. Barnabas Hospital's pediatric emergency room by her 39-year-old mother, Cassidy Reid, on Monday afternoon after consuming an "unknown substance."
Authorities told the New York Post that the girl "showed signs of an opiate overdose." She received Narcan, a common brand of naloxone that quickly reverses opioid overdoses, at the hospital and is expected to survive, according to police.
According to the criminal complaint against Reid, obtained by the Post, an officer responding to their Bronx apartment found "residue of a white powdery substance" suspected to be cocaine on the dining room table.
Around 30 pills, believed to contain amphetamine, lorazepam and methylphenidate, were discovered in a bottle with no name or prescription, court documents allege.
The mother told police she was napping when her friend, who was at the apartment, woke her up "and said the baby wasn't breathing," according to the filing.
"I don't know where the cocaine came from," she said. "I didn't see it there. No one would bring cocaine into the house. I used to do cocaine, but that was when I was 19."
Reid was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and criminal possession of a controlled substance. According to court records, a Bronx judge freed her on her own recognizance at her arraignment.
In an unrelated case early Tuesday, police responded to a 911 call and found an unconscious and unresponsive 18-month-old girl at an apartment on Honeywell Avenue near East 179th Street.
The child was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital by EMS, where she was also given Narcan, according to the Post. She is listed in stable condition.
Her dad, Karon Powell, 35, and mom, Malquisha Durant, 28, were arrested and each charged with reckless endangerment, acting in a manner injurious to a child and criminal possession of a controlled substance, police said.
Police told the paper that a Ziploc bag with cocaine residue was found in the bedroom near the TV and cable box.
These cases came just days after 3-month-old Genevieve Comager was discovered dead off the Major Deegan Expressway on Sunday night, and 6-year-old Jalayah Eason died last Friday after being found covered in bruises and trauma inside her family's filthy Bronx apartment.
