NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A City College public safety officer shot and injured two NYPD officers as they were escorting a woman back to her Queens home after she reported a domestic violence incident on Tuesday, officials said.

Rondell Goppy, 41, fired at the two domestic violence officers inside a home on 179th Street in Springfield Gardens around 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said at a news briefing. At least one of the officers returned Goppy's fire and shot him, Shea said. Goppy was pronounced dead at the scene.

One of the NYPD officers was shot in the right upper thigh and underwent surgery to repair a fractured femur, Shea said. The other officer was shot at least once in both hands, he said.

Both officers were "awake and in stable condition" at Jamaica Hospital as of Tuesday afternoon, the commissioner said.

"This afternoon's events in the 105th Precinct serve as a stark reminder to the dangers that New York City police officers are facing on the streets every day," he said.

The 41-year-old woman the two injured officers were escorting walked into the 105th Precinct station house on Tuesday morning to report a domestic violence incident that allegedly took place on Monday evening, Shea said.

The officers brought the woman back to her home after she filed the report, he said. Six minutes after the three entered the house, Goppy walked inside and started shooting at the officers, he said.

Shea didn't immediately elaborate on the relationship between Goppy and the woman. ABC7 previously reported that he may have been her husband.

Police officers who searched the home after Goppy died found "multiple" licensed guns inside, the commissioner said.

A City College spokesperson on Tuesday confirmed that Goppy was an employee.

"As there is an active investigation being conducted by the NYPD, what we can say is that The City College of New York community learned today that Specialist Rondell Goppy, a City College Public Safety Officer, lost his life in the course of an apparent domestic violence incident at his home in Queens," the spokesperson said in a statement provided to 1010 WINS.

The NYPD had responded to the home several times before Tuesday for calls reporting domestic incidents, Shea said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, who appeared alongside Shea at the briefing, said he was grateful the officers were going to "pull through."

"When it comes to protecting these innocent people, we depend on our officers," he said. "We need to be thankful for the work they do."

Officials didn't immediately release the injured officers' names or provide any additional details about the incident. An investigation is ongoing.
