NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A woman who fatally shot two NYU students on vacation outside a bar in Puerto Rico on Saturday night has been detained, authorities said.
The woman, who was seen in a video provided by police, was set to appear in court Tuesday morning while the investigation into the fatal shootings of Franco Medina, 29, and Sergio Palomino Ruiz, 28, continues, WABC-7 reported.
Her identity has not been released at this time.
The two students were innocent bystanders celebrating a friend's birthday when they were shot at when a dispute between the suspect and a group of people at the bar erupted, authorities said.
Medina and Palomino Ruiz were pursuing MBAs at the Stern School of Business. Both were on a group trip with other classmates, the university said.
In a statement, NYU said the community is "brokenhearted and shocked" by their deaths.
"The University has been in touch with the remaining group members to offer them support and aid; none of the others were injured," the statement said. "NYU has also reached out to the families of the slain students to provide whatever assistance we can and to express the sympathies of the University community."
The university added that they are offering counseling services to "students in the MBA program, the Stern School community, and especially to the close peers and friends of the slain students."
"NYU grieves today with the family, loved ones, and friends of these students, whose lives ended tragically, suddenly, and far too early," the statement continued.
The Stern Student Government created a GoFundMe page to assist the victims' families with funeral expenses.
"They were such rays of light in our community, constantly bringing laughter, smiles and joy to all of us," the fundraiser page said. "We express our profound sympathies for their families and want to offer assistance how we can."
