2 swimmers at Jersey Shore, Rockaway Beach in critical condition after drownings

According to officials at NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, New York City only has about a third of the approximately 1,400 lifeguards needed to safely patrol swimmers this summer along New York's 14 miles of public beaches and numerous pools. Part of the reason stems from a dispute between city officials and the lifeguard union over the notoriously difficult swimming tests that weed out many applicants.

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Two swimmers at two separate beaches in New York City and the Jersey Shore were in critical condition after emergency rescues that took place almost simultaneously Friday evening, according to New York City Parks and Bradley Beach Police officials.

One incident took place at Rockaway Beach in Queens by Beach 93rd Street around 5:45 p.m.

Lifeguards spotted an unidentified 32-year-old man struggling in the ocean and jumped into action. He was unconscious and not breathing when they got him to shore, but they managed to revive him.

EMS rushed the man to St. John's Episcopal Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Also at 5:45 p.m. Friday night, rescuers were called to New Jersey’s Bradley Beach near Kent Avenue as two unidentified men struggled to keep their heads above water, officials said.

Lifeguards leave around 5 p.m. on weekdays at Bradley Beach.

Multiple rescue agencies arrived, and emergency responders were able to bring one man back to the shore safely.

The other man went under for about 20 minutes before rescuers found him and pulled him to shore. He was not breathing, but medics were able to revive him, according to authorities.

He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
