NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A 14-year-old boy died in a drowning off Rockaway Beach on Sunday evening, police said.

Authorities responded to a 911 call around 6 p.m. about a person in the water near Beach 73rd Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard in Arverne.

The boy was pulled from the water by lifeguards, but he ultimately died at a hospital.

The teen hasn’t yet been identified by police.

The Parks Department had closed the beach to swimmers around 5 p.m. due to severe weather, but some lifeguards were still around and managed to locate him with the help of a retired lifeguard, according to the Daily News.

"We did our protocol, which is a diving line," the retired lifeguard, Basia Lewandowski, told the outlet. "All the lifeguards line up and we sweep the water."

In a statement Sunday the Parks Department said, "Our hearts go out to the young man's family and friends following today's tragedy."
