NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- AAA is predicting record travel this Memorial Day weekend despite high gas prices.
The association projects 45 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home, with a record 39.1 million traveling by car.
Many travelers are expected to get a head start on Thursday before a surge of traffic heading into the weekend.
The holiday comes as the average price for a gallon of gas reached $4.67 in New York City—up $1.50 from this time last year.
Average prices for a gallon are $4.53 on Long Island and $4.52 in New Jersey.
At the Vince Lombardi Service Area on the New Jersey Turnpike in Ridgefield on Thursday morning, the price was $4.60.
“I do not like it,” said Bob, who was heading to Boston with his partner. “I never used to care about the gas prices—you know, it is what it is—but now it’s gotten to be a bit much.”
Nationally, the average for a gallon of gas was $4.56 on Wednesday, according to AAA.
