With the emergence of new Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch on Monday also came the announcement of the full return of alternate side parking starting July 5.

The move follows the city's partial suspension of parking in March 2020 and a reduction in street cleaning from twice a week to once a week. The policy ultimately allowed drivers to move their cars once a week instead of twice.

"The partial suspension of [Alternate Side Parking] was a pandemic measure to let people stay inside, but it went on for far too long," she said.

Tisch said the COVID-era decision has also led to the streets' becoming more filthy, with some cars not moving all together.

"The dirty little secret here is that when [Alternate Side Parking] went to one day a week instead of two, in practice it was like having no cleaning on lots of blocks in this city," she added.

The city announced the alternate side parking move as part of an $11 million commitment that also allows equipment and personnel to perform year-round street cleaning on protected bike lanes.

Tisch, who recently led New York City's technology agency and replaced retiring Edward Grayson, said the city is also introducing new mini sweepers for bike lanes to address long-standing complaints from the city's cyclists.

"New York City's bike lanes are about to get a lot cleaner and clearer," she said.
