NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A baby boy died in Brooklyn on Friday after he was found burned near a leaky steam pipe in his family's apartment, police said.

The 11-month-old was found unconscious around 6 a.m. by his parents in a bedroom of their building at East 14th Street and Avenue I in Midwood, according to police.

The boy was apparently burned by a leaking steam pipe in the room, police said.

According to police, the mother was in another room feeding a second child when the boy was scalded.

He was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The medical examiner will determine his cause of death. No arrests have been reported.

The boys' parents were seen returning to the home from the hospital around 11 a.m. The solemn father was carrying a baby blanket, and his face appeared burned.

Numerous inspectors from the Buildings Department were at the scene to make sure no other residents were at risk.

A few residents said the heat is very high in the building and that they usually keep their radiators off, something that's not unusual for New York City apartments, most of which use scorching steam heat.

The boy's death comes as temperatures have been dangerously cold in the city this week.
