NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Tuesday endorsed fellow progressive Zohran Mamdani for New York City mayor, saying, "At this dangerous moment in history, status quo politics isn’t good enough."
“We need new leadership that is prepared to stand up to powerful corporate interests & fight for the working class,” Sanders wrote on social media. “[Mamdani] is providing that vision. He is the best choice for NYC mayor.”
Mamdani—a 33-year-old state assemblymember from Queens who, along with Cuomo, is among the frontrunners in the race—was endorsed earlier this month by U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
AOC and Sanders, who like Mamdani are democratic socialists, have appeared together at multiple rallies this year as part of Sanders’ “Fighting Oligarchy Tour.”
In response to the endorsement, Mamdani said Sanders "has been the single most influential political figure in my life."
"As Mayor, I will strive to live up to his example by fighting for the working class every day and hopefully make Brooklyn’s own proud," Mamdani said.
