NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A 4-year-old boy died Tuesday after he was possibly exposed to fentanyl at a family shelter in Brooklyn, according to police and sources.

The child was barely breathing around 8 a.m. Tuesday when police responded to the Women in Need (WIN) shelter at 4612 Glenwood Rd. in East Flatbush.

Officers used the overdose reversal drug naloxone to try to stabilize the boy, but he died at Maimonides Medical Center. He has not yet been identified.

Sources told 1010 WINS that investigators believe he was exposed to fentanyl before his death.

His parents were both taken into custody and questioned for hours at the 63rd Precinct stationhouse, with the questioning lasting into Tuesday night.

Investigators seized drug paraphernalia from the shelter and were in the process of testing it, police said.

No arrests had been reported as of Wednesday.

A hazmat team was at the scene for at least 12 hours.

In a statement, WIN said it was “devastated” by the incident.

“We are working closely with the NYPD to support their ongoing investigation. We remain committed as ever to fostering a safe and supportive,” the shelter provider said.
