Angel Montanez, 42, beat and strangled Lidia Herrera, 65, to death around 3 a.m. on July 3, 2019 in her apartment while two of his children watched.
“The defendant killed the grandmother of his children while his three children were in her home. Two of them witnessed the murder and are living with that trauma,” said Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark. “A jury found him guilty of second-degree Murder and he will spend many years in prison for destroying so many lives in a single heinous act.”
Montanez got in an argument with his mother-in-law while his children slept nearby. He punched her in the head and proceeded to strangle her with an HDMI cord.
Two of the children, who were all under the age of 11 at the time, woke up and witnessed the murder.
Emergency responders pronounced Herrera dead at the scene.
A coroner later found she suffered a fractured hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage — injuries consistent with strangulation.
A Westchester jury found Montanez guilty of murder on May 25.
