NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A Brooklyn man hacked into dozens of Wegmans customer accounts and ran up a $9,000 tab before getting caught, federal prosecutors said Monday.

Attorney Trini E. Ross announced that Maurice Sheftall, 24, pleaded guilty to fraud and related activity in connection with computers before U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa.

Attorney Meghan K. McGuire stated that in January 2021 Sheftall obtained customer logins and passwords of more than 50 individuals who had accounts on the Wegmans website. He logged into each of the customer accounts and then locked them out by changing passwords and email verification.

He ran the scam from January 22, 2021 to July 25, 2021. Sheftall used the saved credit card information to complete approximately 25 orders, delivering groceries to himself and his associates, racking up $9,297.05 in charges.

Actual losses totaled $41,441, including approximately $15,000 in legal fees incurred by Wegmans and $16,000 for dark web protection to determine how Sheftall was able to obtain customer account information, according to the feds.

Judge Siragusa sentenced Sheftall to three years of probation and ordered him to pay more than $41,000 in restitution, prosecutors said.

Also included in the restitution is reimbursement to customers for stolen funds as well as about $1,000 for employee time for responding to the theft.
