Over a dozen cars smashed as man barrels through Brooklyn in stolen dump truck

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A man stole a dump truck and tore through the streets of Brooklyn, smashing into more than a dozen parked cars in a drunken joyride before he was arrested, police said.

Mario Casanova got into a semi-truck hauling a dumpster near 21st Drive and 21st Avenue in Bath Beach around 4:30 a.m. Thursday, police told WNBC, which obtained surveillance video of the destructive spree.

Casanova struck at least 18 parked cars, rendering some inoperable, as he drove through the streets and into Bensonhurst Park, where a tree and light pole were also hit, according to the report. He also allegedly struck cars on an exit ramp of the Belt Parkway.

Sources told PIX11 that officers had to use pepper spray on Casanova in order to get him into custody.

There were no reports of injuries.

The extent of the rampage became clearer throughout the day as residents discovered their damaged vehicles in the streets.

"I park my car here all the time," one resident told WNBC of his Cadillac. "I come back over here and I see my car sideways."

Casanova faces charges that include robbery, grand larceny, reckless endangerment and driving while intoxicated.

He was reportedly out on parole at the time and has more than a dozen prior arrests.
