NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A dog was killed by an electrified sidewalk grate in Brooklyn on Monday evening, despite a bystander’s attempt to save the pet with CPR, officials and witnesses said.

The dog was being walked by its owners near Clay and Commercial streets in Greenpoint around 7:30 p.m. when the canine walked on the metal grate and was electrocuted, according to officials and witnesses.
The dog yelped, and a woman from a nearby dog training class rushed over and tried to save the pet, but she was unsuccessful, witness Leslie Roach told WNBC.
“One of my students, who’s very brave, ran outside to help. She tried giving the dog CPR. She had her mouth on the dog’s mouth and was really, really just trying her best to help that whole family,” Roach said.
A source said a person was also shocked in the incident, but it’s unclear if that person was one of the dog’s owners, the woman who tried to save the dog, or someone else.
Con Edison said crews inspected the area and found that the grate was neither built nor maintained by the utility company.
It appears the electricity came from a metal grate in the sidewalk where a privately owned streetlamp had been removed.
Con Ed is familiar with the problem this time of year. The company said road salt melts ice and seeps underground, where it damages cables and releases an electrical current.
