NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An 11-year-old girl became sick and died while on a flight from Istanbul to New York on Sunday, airline officials confirmed.

The child, whose identity has not yet been released, was on a Turkish Airlines flight headed to John F. Kennedy Airport when she became ill, prompting it to stop in Hungary, the airline said in a statement.

"Our cabin crew made the announcement on the PA system for any doctors on board while the captain of the flight immediately diverted to Budapest," the airline said.

A doctor who was also a passenger on the flight attended to the girl as the flight's crew prepared to make an emergency landing at Budapest's Ferenc Liszt International Airport at about 10:30 a.m.

When the plane landed, emergency medical teams were waiting and boarded the plane in order to treat the girl, Turkish Airlines added.

"Despite the rapid and professional intervention, unfortunately, her life could not be saved," a spokesperson for the airport said.

The flight continued its planned route several hours after the emergency landing and arrived at JFK with a four-and-a-half-hour delay, the airline said.

It is unclear which country the child was a citizen of.

"We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones and share their pain," Turkish Airlines said.
